[NEWS] Jennifer Reveals, "I Was Almost Replaced on Friends!"

article by: Dana Rose Falcone

PEOPLE magazine
Jennifer accepting the Montecito award
"While attending the 30th Annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival to accept the Montecito award, which is given to a star whose standout performances and style have been a contribution to film. She attended the festival with her fiance screenwriter/actor Justin Theroux, and they were both greeted by cheers when they arrived for her Q&A session. During which Jennifer revealed some secrets regarding almost being replaced as Rachel Green on '90s NBC sitcom Friends. It's hard to imagine anyone besides Jennifer Aniston playing Rachel Green on Friends, but according to the actress the producers were almost forced to replace her before the show even aired. Friends came on when I was off doing Muddling Through," explained Aniston in an earlier interview during the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Friday, referring to CBS's short-lived 1994 sitcom. "So there was a period where I had to stand out of the photographs for the group shots, and I got phone calls from my girlfriends saying, 'I'm auditioning for your part on Friends.' " Back in '94 when Jennifer had signed on for Friends, she was already appearing on Muddling Through, and was aware that she might have to back out of Friends if her other show was a hit. Luckily for her, the show's producers didn't need find a replacement Rachel. "They just took the chance that Muddling Through would fail after the two episodes they picked it up for," said Jennifer during the film festival's Q&A. "So I just started doing this back-and-forth from Sony to Warner Bros. for two weeks." With each series riding on the others misfortune eventually Muddling Through only lasted for three months, leaving Jennifer to focus solely on Friends once the other series had been canceled."

[REVIEW] 'She's Funny That Way' Film Review

Here's what critic's had to say about Peter Bogdanovich's indie/screwball comedy film 'She's Funny That Way' also know as 'Squirrels to the Nuts' with criticism from Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic and IMDb:

Review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a score of 39% based on reviews from 82 critics with an average rating of 5.2/10.0. Rotten Tomatoes critic consensus states: " 'She's Funny That Way' is an affectionate, talent-filled throwback to screwball comedies of old - which makes it even more frustrating that the laughs are disappointing few and far between." Positive reviews from Rotten Tomatoes include: "This is a light and lovely confection that doesn't linger in the mind, but it will certainly leave you smiling." - said critic Liz Braun of the Toronto Sun. " 'She's Funny That Way' is a breath of fresh air and a big ball of energy." - said critic Jack Giroux of Film School Rejects. "There's a skill to pulling off slapstick, and Bogdanovich achieves it here with finesse." - said critic Dov Kornits of FILMINK. Negative reviews from Rotten Tomatoes include: "The giggly men's magazine tone, especially in Bogdanovich's treatment of call girls, makes the movie seem weirdly anachronistic." - said critic J.R. Jones of the Chicago Reader. "The actors do their best with a hit and miss screenplay." - said critic Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times. "So hopelessly nostalgic about the madcap fizz and fury of screwball pictures, it never works up a head of steam as a funny, in this-moment comedy on its own." - said critic Robert Abele of the Los Angeles Times.

"She's Funny That Way is a breath of fresh air and a big ball of energy" - Jack Giroux, Film School Rejects
According to Metacritic the film got a score of 45 out of 100, based on reviews from 25 critics, indicating "generally mixed or average reviews". Positive reviews from Metacritic include: "It may be stuck in the past, with it's hoary cliches about the call girl with the heart of gold and the incurable romantic, but the whole thing fizzes with such joie de vivre that the anachronisms only add to it's overwhelming charm." - said critic John Bleasdale of CineVue. "It's a hysterical screwball fantasia that openly steals from Lubitsch, Hawks, Capra and Sturges and wants to be caught with its fingers in the till. The result is a highly-sexed Jenga-pile of silliness, to which Bogdanovich can't resist adding block after teetering block." - said critic Robbie Collin of The Telegraph. "Familiar as its are/life paralleling may be, it's all fueled by a filmmaker with an intimate relationship to his subject matter." - said critic Carson Lund of Slant magazine. Negative reviews from Metacritic include: "An enthusiastic but low-fizz romantic farce that gets by principally on the charms of a cast speckled with gifted funnymen and more particularly funnywomen." - said critic Guy Lodge of Variety. "A loving ode to screwball comedies from the Golden Age of Hollywood that never approaches the films it pays homage to." - said critic Molly Eichel of the Philadelphia Inquirer. "It's an elaborate and artificial concoction, without any discernible ambition behind it." - said critic Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle.

"She's Funny That Way" is a hark to screwball comedies of the '30s and '40s" - Jason Best, TV Guide magazine
IMDb the internet movie data base gave 'She's Funny That Way' 6.2 stars out of 10.0 stars based on 15,185 votes from 39 users and 157 critics. Positive reviews from IMDb include: " 'She's Funny That Way' is a deliciously daffy, unashamedly old-fashioned confection whose story and style hark back to Hollywood screwball comedies of the '30s and '40s." - said critic Jason Best of TV Guide magazine. " 'She's Funny That Way' is ironically not funny in the least, but it is entertaining enough to satiate we bored movie lovers." - said critic Jonathan Jacobs of Screen Spotlight. Negative reviews from IMDb include: " "She's Funny That Way' follows suit, struggling to retain a certain madcap snap, only the screenplay doesn't offer much in the way of punchlines and the actors gathered aren't especially known for their crisp timing." - said critic Brian Orndorf of Blu-Ray.com "The narrative convolutions rarely add up to a decent punchline and the dialogue is only superficially funny. Modern moviegoers just won't get it, and cineastes mightn't be too impressed either." - said critic Stella Papamichael of Digital Spy.com.

[NEWS] Jennifer Takes the 'Cake' in Her Latest Film Role

Jennifer Aniston as Claire Simmons in 'Cake'
It's always inspiring to witness a rare act of transformation, especially when it involves someone we've come to know and admire, in this case Jennifer Aniston. When she first appears onscrean in Daniel Barnz's new film, 'Cake', we are instantly aware that her character will be nothing like the irresistibly fetching Rachel Green she embodied for a decade on NBC's sitcom 'Friends'. Although the actress has taken on many winning movie roles since 'Friends' left the airwaves, stepping into the skin of her character Claire Simmons - a cynical, complicated forty-something woman who is addicted to prescription painkillers as a result of an auto accident that has left her emotionally and physically scarred - was no small feat for Miss Aniston. "To inhabit the role, I gained weight, quit exercising, wore no make-up and hid my famously luxuriant head of hair under a less than flattering short cut," said Jennifer of her role. The physical self-makeover alone is stunning, but even more impressive than her performance is the courage it took her to step up to such a challenging assignment - the leap earned her critical acclaim - a Golden Globe, Critic's Choice, and Screen Actors Guild award nominations for 'Best Lead Actress of the Year' - and a whole new fan base. Of course, Jennifer isn't the first actor to make such a dramatic leap away from the type cast role, but each time it happens it's exciting to see.

Check out more actors who've stepped into "Transforming Roles" in their careers.

(1982) 'The World According to Garp' - ROBIN WILLIAMS
Left: Robin Williams as T.S. Garp and Right: John Lithgow as Roberta Muldoon in 'The World According to Garp'
Two years before his hit sitcom, 'Mork & Mindy', went off the air, Robin Williams made his jump to the movie screen, playing the cartoony title role in Robert Altman's 'Popeye', but it was his memorable tun as a passionate writer T.S. Garp in 'The Word According to Garp' that showed the world Williams' real acting chops, setting the stage for what would become a remarkable big-screen career.

(1982) 'Frances' - JESSICA LANGE
Jessica Lange as Frances Farmer in 'Frances'
Getting swung around by a giant monkey in (1976) 'King Kong' wasn't exactly the most auspicious film debut for actress Jessica Lange, but five years later, two back-to-back roles would give her the opportunity to show her powerful movie mettle: as they adulterous hash-slinger Cora (1981) 'The Postman Always Rings Twice' opposite actor Jack Nicholson, and as the blacklisted - and ultimately institutionalized - actress Frances Farmer in (1982) 'Frances'.

(1993) 'Philadelphia' - TOM HANKS
Tom Hanks as Andrew Beckett in 'Philadelphia'
For the first lap of his movie career, Tom Hanks specialized in comedy and romance, but in 1993, his portrayal of an AIDS-stricken lawyer in Jonathan Demme's (1993) 'Philadelphia' earned him an Oscar, catapulting him to the upper echelon of movie actors.

(1985) 'The Color Purple' - WHOOPI GOLDBERG
Left: Danny Glover as Albert Johnson "Mister" and Right: Whoopi Goldberg as Celie Harris-Johnson in 'The Color Purple'

Not every actress hits a home run right out of the box, but in 1985, Whoopi Goldberg did exactly that, leaping from stage comedian to Oscar-nominated screen actress with her searing portrayal of the impoverished and abused Celie Harris-Johnson in Steven Spielberg's 'The Color Purple'.

(1989) 'Driving Miss Daisy' - MORGAN FREEMAN
Left: Jessica Tandy as Daisy Werthan and Right: Morgan Freeman as Hoke Colburn in 'Driving Miss Daisy'

For twenty-five years, Morgan Freeman could be depended on to deliver the goods, from his regular spot on television's (1971-1977) 'The Electric Company', to solid supporting roles in big-screen fare such as (1981) 'Eyewitness' and (1988) 'Clean and Sober', but his deft and dignified turn as put-upon chauffer Hoke Colburn in (1989) 'Driving Miss Daisy' - holding his own on camera opposite no less than living legend actress Jessica Tandy - instantly shot him to the top, where he remains today.

(1986) 'Nobody's Child' - MARLO THOMAS
Marlo Thomas as Marie Balter in 'Nobody's Child'
Marlo won our hearts as Ann Marie on (1966-1971) sitcom 'That Girl', but it was her role as Marie Balter playing such a complex character in 'Nobody's Child' based on a true story, which would win her an Emmy for Best Dramatic Actress.

(2003) 'Monster' - CHARLIZE THERON
Charlize Theron as Aileen Wuomos in 'Monster'
Her striking beauty initially kept the roles limited, either as someone's other half (1999) 'The Astronaut's Wife' opposite of actor Johnny Depp, or as the main squeeze in action films (2000) 'Reindeer Games' opposite actor Ben Affleck, but Charlize stepped out on her own with ferocity in 2003 as serial killer Aileen Wuomos in 'Monster' - a role that not only demonstrated her phenomenal breadth as an actress, but also required her to gain thirty-pounds, dye her hair, shave off her eyebrows, and wear prosthetic dentures. She was awarded an Oscar for her performance.

(1999) 'Boys Don't Cry' - HILARY SWANK
Hilary Swank as Brandon Teena in 'Boys Don't Cry'
By the time Hilary Swank debuted on the big screen, she had perfected the skills that had made her a dynamic and stunning regular on (1985-1992) 'Growing Pains' as Sasha Serotsky and (1997-1998) '0Beverly Hills 90210' as Carly Reynolds, but her heroic and heartbreaking turn as twenty one-year old transgender man Brandon Teena born Teena Renae Brandon in (1999) 'Boy's Don't Cry' demonstrated a whole new dexterity that was instantly recognized by critic's and moviegoers across the country. She won an Oscar for her performance.

(1976) 'Sybil' - SALLY FIELD
Left: Sally Field as Sybil Dorsett and Right: Joanne Woodward as Dr. Cornelia Wilbur in 'Sybil'

She came of age as an America television sweetheart, but two closely-spaced roles in film would firmly establish Sally Field as an actor to be reckoned with: as a young woman suffering from multiple-personality disorder in the 1976 television miniseries 'Sybil', and three years later on the big screen, as stormy union organizer in (1979) 'Norma Rae', which earned her an Oscar.

(2013) - 'Dallas Buyers Club' - MATTHEW McCONAUGHEY
Matthew McConaughey as Ron Woodroof in 'Dallas Buyers Club'
Until 2013, Matthew McConaughey was best known for an even-keeled career that had taken him from a dazed and confused Texas teen to the hunky leading man in legal-thrillers to his reign as the Prince of Rom-Com (romantic comedies), but two years ago McConaughey stunned critic's and moviegoers with his explosive turn as a wily and temperamental AIDS victim in 'Dallas Buyers Club'. The role earned him an Oscar along with a whole new following.

A selfie-less trip down the red carpet this power couple doesn't show off their romance on social media (it's okay; we'll just settle for the inevitable paparazzi shot of them gazing lovingly into each others eyes). Why Watch: Just because his hair is dyed blond and he speaks in a funny accent doesn't mean he's not Johnny Depp. He's hilarious as ever in this new role with funny one-liners, physical comedy and provides us with even more laughs opposite of Paltrow when she has to act disgusted each time she plants one on him. (No easy task considering Depp is a desirable man to most woman.)
Tagline: "Sophistication has a name."

Why Watch: Lopez doesn't play a very challenging role, but she was cast alongside a newcomer who displays just as much sex appeal as she does. If you can get past the hot-heavy affair scenes this film cleans itself up at the end.
Tagline: "A moment she couldn't resist, an obsession he can't control."

[REVIEW] 'Cake' "Cake will Review

Here's what critics had to say about Jennifer's indie/drama film 'Cake' with criticism from Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic and IMDb:

Review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a score of 49% based on reviews from 110 critics with an average rating of 5.8/10.0. Rotten Tomatoes critic consensus states: " 'Cake' finds Jennifer Aniston making the most of an overdue opportunity to test her dramatic chops, but it lacks sufficient depth or warmth to recommend all but her most ardent fans." Positive reviews from Rotten Tomatoes include: "Whether or not Aniston ever gets another role like this one, I have a hard time imaging anyone else in it - and that's the sign of a genuine actor." - said critic J.R. Jones of the Chicago Reader. "The main attraction in 'Cake' is Aniston." - said critic Leonard Maltin of Leonard Maltin's Picks. " 'Cake' is worth sitting through just to watch Jennifer Aniston pull off the performance of a lifetime." - said critic Susan Wloszczyna of RogerEbert.com. Negative reviews from Rotten Tomatoes include: "Beyond sly method in which it keeps viewers guessing at Claire's circumstances, the screenplay often fails this otherwise finely-assembled film" - said critic Austin Trunick of Under the Radar. "Nothing about 'Cake' is remotely tempting or sweet." - said critic Claudia Puig of USA Today. "Unsure of whether it wants to be a comedy or tragedy, 'Cake' meandors along an awkward middle path." - said critic Peter Howell of the Toronto Star.

"Jennifer pulls off the performance of a lifetime." - Susan Wloszczyna of RogerEbter.com
According to Metacritic the film got a score of 49 out of 100 based on reviews from 36 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews". Positive reviews from Metacritic include: "What makes Aniston, of all actresses, especially right for 'Cake' is that her comedy has always had a certain ruefulness underlying it, and understanding of life's limits, a kind of glum acceptance. So the transition into sadness and desolation is a natural step for her." - said critic Mick LaSelle of the San Francisco Chronicle. "A comedy that barely flirts with funny and a grim weeper that never quite raises a tear, 'Cake' has one thing going for it - Jennifer Aniston." - said critic Roger Moore of Movie Nation. "If you can't see where this is going, you've probably never seen a movie before. But the script plods on, complete with an ending that futilely tries to tidy up the scenario strands. Miraculously, Aniston maintains our rooting interest." - said critic Peter Travers of Rolling Stone magazine. Negative reviews from Metacritic include: "Here Aniston suffers every manipulative cliche and contrivance in the tearjerker playbook. She works hard, and it's painful to watch." - said critics Peter Keough of the Boston Globe. "There's no doubt that Aniston deserves more roles like this one, but, with luck, in less maudlin, more surprising movies." - said critic Ann Hornaday of the Washington Post. "True, Aniston does maybe her best film work to date in 'Cake', but it's definitely not her best film." - said critic Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times.

"Cake will leave you uplifted and inspired." - Mike Williams of Live For Films
IMDb the internet movie data base gave 'Cake' 6.5 stars out of a 10.0 star rating based on 25,917 votes from 131 users and 154 critics. Positive reviews from IMDb critics include: "Life's a pain for Jennifer Aniston's Claire, but her deadpan comic timing is a joy for us." - said critic Jason Best of Movie Talk. " 'Cake' addresses an unusual subject unevenly. It's biggest success may be in giving casting directors the idea that Aniston's got more to give than her filmography would suggest." - said critic Laura Clifford of Reeling Reviews. "At the end of the day, 'Cake' at least stands better as a showcase for the potential dramatic chips of the once and future Rachel Green than it does as the latest life-affirming indie." - said critic William Gross of the Austin Chronicle. "Regardless, the main reason to seek out 'Cake' is for Aniston's genuine and dyname performance, full of emotional distress." - said critic Joe Baker of Dallas Film Now. Negative reviews from IMDb critics include: "Daniel Barnz's 'Cake' is a movie that deserves to be dinged for a lack of ambition and novelty." - said critic David Bax of Battleship Pretension. "Aniston's performance is strong and unglamorous, but suffice it to say, would have been put to better use in a more worthy picture." - said critic Andy Kaiser of Andy's Film Blog. " 'Cake' will leave you (marginally) uplifted and inspired in small doses, but its melancholic atmosphere is relentless as its, at times, wobbly narrative feels like an ongoing struggle with no real progression, which is what we're perhaps meant to feel in order to even begin to relate to Claire's hellish, guilt-ridden existence." - said critic Mike Williams of Live For Films.
