Aniston missed the films premiers at both the Venice Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival due to promoting Cake. Director Peter Bogdanovich said the following of casting Aniston, "I initially offered her the lead role as Isabella, but she turned it down explaining that she felt that the role of the therapist was a more 'showier' part and I didn't disagree with her once I saw her bring the part to life." This is Bogdanvich's first film in over 20 years since he directed 1993's The Thing Called Love starring actress Samantha Mathis, actor River Phoenix, actor Dermot Mulroney, and actress Sandra Bullock. The movie didn't prove successful and bombed in box office racking in less than the films $14 million dollar budget only earning $1,029,721 in box office.
