[NEWS] Hollywood's Most Notorious Divorces

What's the one thing we love more than reading about a celebrity couple being happily married? The answer, a celebrity couple divorcing - the whole why they split, who gets what, what went wrong, and who's career will rise and who's will fall. Sometimes you get divorced citing irreconcilable differences and other times you get an annulment citing - gasp! - fraud?! Here's a list of Hollywood's most notorious divorces that have graced the cover of People magazine.

This list does NOT include more recent divorces such as Jennifer Garner's and Ben Affleck's or Blake Shelton's and Miranda Lamberts.

Jennifer Aniston & Brad Pitt

Who could forget the divorce of television/film actress Jennifer Aniston and film actor Brad Pitt? We'll tell you who - the tabloids. The couple married in Malibu, California on a cliff side bluff July 29, 2000. She is America's television sweetheart through NBC's beloved sitcom Friends, and he charmed his way into our hearts through the silver screen with his chiseled good looks in films such as (1999) Fight Club (yeah we know more nitty-gritty than sex appeal, but he's still sexy under all that dirt), (2004) Troy who could forget his rippling muscles as Achiles?

(2005) People magazine Brad & Jen: Why They Split.

For years - we're only talking 5-years, but that's considered a longtime in Hollywood - Jen and Brad's marriage was considered a rare Hollywood success. January 2005 the couple announced their split through via People magazine issuing the following statement: "We would like to announce that after seven years together we have decided to formally separate. For those who follow these sorts of things, we would like to explain that our separation is not the result of any speculation reported by the tabloid media. This decision is the result of much thoughtful consideration. We happily remain committed and caring friends with great love and admiration for one another. We ask in advance for your kindness and sensitivity in the coming months." -  Respectfully, Jennifer Aniston & Brad Pitt.

(2005) Mr. & Mrs. Smith
We all know the story too - Rumors, that were later confirmed as true by the press - that Brad got too close to his (2005) Mr. & Mrs. Smith co-star actress Angelina Jolie. Tabloids dubbed Brad as a heart breaker, Jennifer as a victim of infidelity, and Angelina a home wreaking whore. In April 2005 Jennifer filed for divorce citing irreconcilable differences. Their divorce was finalized October 2, 2005 by the Los Angeles, California Superior court.

Their divorce has even stood the test of time even though each has moved on - Jennifer is happily married to screenwriter/actor Justin Theroux and Brad is happily married to actress Angelina Jolie. During an interview on CBS's Sunday mornings Aniston was derailed by question regarding her divorce from Pitt, when asked if it is still painful talking about it, replying, "I don't find it painful. It think it's [her divorce from Pitt] a narrative that follows you because it's an interesting headline. It's more of a media-driven topic. We [her and Brad] exchange good wishes and all that sort of stuff to each other, but it's NOT a constant thing. I mean, do you still talk to your ex-wife?"

Who could forget the divorce of Oscar winning actress Reese Witherspoon and actor Ryan Phillippe? The couple married in Charleston, South Carolina at Old Wide Awake Plantation on June 5, 1999.

(1999) Cruel Intentions
She is another one of the up and coming America's sweethearts through film and he was a hot young up and coming actor in film as well. While on set of the film (1999) Cruel Intentions their chemistry blossomed into an off-screen romance. During a scene where each of their characters are suppose to express their disgusted both Reese and Ryan had difficulty getting through it: Ryan felt physically sick to his stomach resulting in him puking, and Reese was hysterically crying because they both knew neither felt the way in real life the way their characters did on-screen.

They were married for seven years, had two kids - a daughter Ava, and a son Deacon, and made multiple movies. Reese and Ryan's relationship took a turn for the worst when it came to award season in 2006.

(2005) Walk the Line
March 5, 2006 the 78th Academy awards came and went with Reese being awarded Best Supporting Actress of the year for her role as June Carter-Cash in the musical/drama film (2005) Walk the Line opposite actor Joaquin Phoenix. People call it the curse of the Oscars - you win an Academy award and your romantic life takes a tole for the worst such as divorce if your married or a break-up if your in a relationship.

(2006) People magazine Reese Witherspoon & Ryan Phillippe: Why The Split.
In October 2006, the couple announced they were splitting with Reese filling for divorce citing "irreconcilable differences". In her petition she sough joint legal as well as sole custody of their children, with full visitation rights for Ryan. With no further prenuptial agreement, each would be entitled to half of all of their assets gained during their marriage under California law - with Witherspoon's being more significant. Their divorce was finalized October of 2007, becoming more open about details regarding their relationship, mainly due to the release of paparazzi pictures of them vacationing together in Rome.

Who could forget the divorce of actress Renee Zellweger and country music singer Kenny Chesney? She is an Oscar winning actress and he is one of country music's most beloved superstars. The couple married in the Virgin Islands on Saint John May 9, 2005.

(2004) Cinderella Man
At the time she was filming biographical/drama film (2005) Cinderella Man opposite actor Russell Crowe, and Chesney was recording his tenth studio album The Road and the Radio.

(2005) People magazine Renee & Kenny Split: What Went Wrong.
September 15, 2005 their relationship changed for the worst after the couple announced they were filling for an annulment, but after Renee cited "fraud" as the reason she was later entitled to give an explanation.Under media scrutiny in an interview she said, "The word 'fraud' is simply 'legal language' and 'not a reflection of Kenny's character' ". Other rumors began to swirl in regards to the country music singers sexuality with related tabloids calling Chesney 'gay'. Kenny denied the rumors setting the record straight stating, "I am straight," suggesting, "the failure of my marriage was due to the panic from the intense media scrutiny surrounding it. The only fraud that was committed was me thinking that I knew what it was like...that I really understood what it was like to be married, and really didn't. Renee and Kenny's annulment was finalized in December of 2005.

Who could forget the divorce of Australian actress Nicole Kidman and Mission: Impossible film franchise actor Tom Cruise? They couple married in Telluride, Colorado on Christmas Eve December 24, 1990.

(1992) Far and Away
While together the paired were opposite one another in three films including (1990) Days of Thunder; where the pair first met and fell in love, (1992) Far and Away, and (1999) Eyes Wide Shut.

(2001) People magazine Inside Tom & Nicole's Divorce Settlement: Who Got What.
On February 1, 2001 the couple's spokesperson announced Nicole and Tom's separation after ten-years of marriage. Two days later Cruise filed for divorce citing "irreconcilable differences" and the marriage was dissolved in August of 2001. During that time Kidman was unknowingly pregnant as well as filming the musical/drama film (2001) Moulin Rouge!.

Due to the stress of her divorce and the vigorous film role of Satin in Moulin Rouge!, which required the actress to sing and dance, sources said that Kidman's pregnancy ended with a miscarriage, but later she stated in an interview, "It was wrongly reported," said the actress, "I had actually had an ectopic pregnancy."

In 2006 Nicole in an interview she spoke of how much she still loved Tom stating, "He was huge; still is. To me, he was just Tom, but to everybody else, he is huge. But he was lovely to me. And I loved him. I still love him. Since then each has moved on - Nicole is happily married to country music singer Keith Urban and Tom has gone through his third divorce from actress Katie Holmes.

Who could forget the divorce of Die Hard film franchise actor Bruce Willis and actress Demi Moore? The couple married November 21, 1987 after having met and fallen in love while at the premiere of the film (1987) Stakeout. While together they had three daughters Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah.

(1988) Die Hard
Bruce filmed memorable blockbuster hits: (1988-1995) Die Hard, Die Hard 2, and Die Hard with a Vengeance, (1994) Pulp Fiction, (1995) 12 Monkeys, (1997) The Fifth Element, and (1998) Armageddon.

(1990) Ghost
Demi filmed memorable blockbuster hits: (1990) Ghost, (1992) A Few Good Men, (1993) Indecent Proposal, (1996) Striptease with her daughter Rumer playing her on-screen daughter, (1996) The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and (1997) G.I. Jane.

(1998) People magazine: Bruce & Demi's Sudden Split.
June 24, 1998 after eleven-years of marriage the couple announced their separation. They filed for divorce citing "irreconcilable differences" on October 18, 2000. Regarding his divorce from Moore, Willis said, "I felt I had failed as a father and as a husband by not being able to make it work," said the actor in an interview. Three years later in 2003 both Bruce and Demi are cast in the sequel action/spy film Charlie's Angeles: Full Throttle film. He signed on for the film role first opting that Demi have a role as well so she was cast as the films antagonist that the angel's are up against. Credit for helping him cope through his divorce from Demi goes to rapper/actor Will Smith. After Bruce and Demi's break-up, rumors persisted that the couple planned to remarry, until Demi married That '70s Show actor Ashton Kutcher on September 24, 2005.
