[REVIEW] 'The Leftovers' Critic Reviews

The second season has yet to have a set premiere date, but what do the critic's have to say about actor/screenwriter Justin Theroux's series? The Leftovers first season received generally positive reviews from critic's and viewers alike. No particular performance was analyzed by the critic's, but that didn't stop them from criticizing creator David Lindelof and co-creator/novelist Tom Perrotta's work. Here's what the critic's had to say with criticism from Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic, and IMDb.

"The Leftovers is promising" - film critic Sam Wollaston
Review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes gave the first season of the series got a score of 70% based on reviews from 60 critics, with an average rating of 6.9/10.0. Positive reviews from Rotten Tomatoes critics include: "Yes, 'The Leftovers' is baffling...there is a beauty about it too, though. Plus promising - that if you put the effort in you will be rewarded, with a drama that is more about people after a catastrophic even, than the event.", "Damon Lindelof of 'Lost' and Peter Berg of 'Friday Night Lights' actually form the perfect partnership for this complex parable", "You get a healthy dose of chaos and madness." Negative reviews from Rotten Tomatoes critics include: "It doesn't do anything for me to have this show be one of thee flatulence-heavy existentialist mysteries, where nothing is revealed because there is nothing to reveal", "The sense of unease essential to the novel makes for a program that itself often feels unsure of what it's doing, where it's going, or the message it's trying to convey", "Save your appetite  for something fresh as these 'Leftovers' have been warmed too many times".

"It's one of the more riveting new series" - film critic Tim Goodman
According to Metacritic, the first season of the series got a score of 65 out of 100, based on reviews from 42 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews". Positive reviews from Metacritic critic's include: "None of this would work without compelling characters. Fortunately, 'The Leftovers' has bunches of them", "It's pretty grim stuff - but quite engrossing and worth your time", "If Lindelof and Perrotta can somehow strike a balance of the human, emotional fallout while also delving into an explanation of the oddities involved in 'the sudden departure', then 'The Leftovers' could be one of the more riveting new series". Negative reviews from Metacritic critic's include: "Lots of hearts are likely to harden in resistance to the calculated grimness, the nightmarish images. Not to mention the preening incoherence that pervades this script based on the novel by Tom Perrotta, a work whose measured tone bears no resemblance whatever to the goings on here", "Almost every moment here is staged to scream 'Look at me! I'm arty!' Lindelof, burned mightily by the backlash over 'Lost's' ridiculous finale, has all but told reporters that the mystery central to 'The Leftovers' will never be explained. That leaves you with a show wallowing in smug self-importance, melancholy and drear week after week.", "The Leftovers' is boring, dull and mundane. Not even the talented cast shines in this show which offers viewers nothing but the dourness. Nevertheless, great background music!".

"One of the most exciting new series from HBO in years!" - film critic Anonymous
IMDb the internet movie data base gave the series first season 7.7 stars out of a 10.0 star rating based on 22,152 votes from 157 users and 19 critics. Positive reviews from IMDb critics include: "This show has top notch acting by all concerned and is driven by the development of the characters, and the unfolding of events that now follow the rapture", "I am totally hooked and I think this is one of the most exciting new series from HBO in years", "This show could be good, we won't know unless it gets picked up for another season, but don't let the negative reviews scare you off. Let's give it a chance and see where it takes us". Negative reviews from IMDb critics include: "Two of the main problems with 'The Leftovers' is that none of the characters are memorable and the show doesn't reward you for your time", "The very appropriate tilted 'The Leftovers', is like digging through my fridge, finding the same old bland crap that I didn't like enough to finish the first time, and wondering if it will still be palatable after scrapping the mold off, and stuff it in the microwave, in a half baked attempt to fill a craving, "The Leftovers' is slow pacing but you have to give the viewers something to hook onto. The shows intriguing premise simply isn't enough."
