[REVIEW] 'She's Funny That Way' Film Review

Here's what critic's had to say about Peter Bogdanovich's indie/screwball comedy film 'She's Funny That Way' also know as 'Squirrels to the Nuts' with criticism from Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic and IMDb:

Review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a score of 39% based on reviews from 82 critics with an average rating of 5.2/10.0. Rotten Tomatoes critic consensus states: " 'She's Funny That Way' is an affectionate, talent-filled throwback to screwball comedies of old - which makes it even more frustrating that the laughs are disappointing few and far between." Positive reviews from Rotten Tomatoes include: "This is a light and lovely confection that doesn't linger in the mind, but it will certainly leave you smiling." - said critic Liz Braun of the Toronto Sun. " 'She's Funny That Way' is a breath of fresh air and a big ball of energy." - said critic Jack Giroux of Film School Rejects. "There's a skill to pulling off slapstick, and Bogdanovich achieves it here with finesse." - said critic Dov Kornits of FILMINK. Negative reviews from Rotten Tomatoes include: "The giggly men's magazine tone, especially in Bogdanovich's treatment of call girls, makes the movie seem weirdly anachronistic." - said critic J.R. Jones of the Chicago Reader. "The actors do their best with a hit and miss screenplay." - said critic Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times. "So hopelessly nostalgic about the madcap fizz and fury of screwball pictures, it never works up a head of steam as a funny, in this-moment comedy on its own." - said critic Robert Abele of the Los Angeles Times.

According to Metacritic the film got a score of 45 out of 100, based on reviews from 25 critics, indicating "generally mixed or average reviews". Positive reviews from Metacritic include: "It may be stuck in the past, with it's hoary cliches about the call girl with the heart of gold and the incurable romantic, but the whole thing fizzes with such joie de vivre that the anachronisms only add to it's overwhelming charm." - said critic John Bleasdale of CineVue. "It's a hysterical screwball fantasia that openly steals from Lubitsch, Hawks, Capra and Sturges and wants to be caught with its fingers in the till. The result is a highly-sexed Jenga-pile of silliness, to which Bogdanovich can't resist adding block after teetering block." - said critic Robbie Collin of The Telegraph. "Familiar as its are/life paralleling may be, it's all fueled by a filmmaker with an intimate relationship to his subject matter." - said critic Carson Lund of Slant magazine. Negative reviews from Metacritic include: "An enthusiastic but low-fizz romantic farce that gets by principally on the charms of a cast speckled with gifted funnymen and more particularly funnywomen." - said critic Guy Lodge of Variety. "A loving ode to screwball comedies from the Golden Age of Hollywood that never approaches the films it pays homage to." - said critic Molly Eichel of the Philadelphia Inquirer. "It's an elaborate and artificial concoction, without any discernible ambition behind it." - said critic Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle.

"She's Funny That Way" is a hark to screwball comedies of the '30s and '40s" - Jason Best, TV Guide magazine
IMDb the internet movie data base gave 'She's Funny That Way' 6.2 stars out of 10.0 stars based on 15,185 votes from 39 users and 157 critics. Positive reviews from IMDb include: " 'She's Funny That Way' is a deliciously daffy, unashamedly old-fashioned confection whose story and style hark back to Hollywood screwball comedies of the '30s and '40s." - said critic Jason Best of TV Guide magazine. " 'She's Funny That Way' is ironically not funny in the least, but it is entertaining enough to satiate we bored movie lovers." - said critic Jonathan Jacobs of Screen Spotlight. Negative reviews from IMDb include: " "She's Funny That Way' follows suit, struggling to retain a certain madcap snap, only the screenplay doesn't offer much in the way of punchlines and the actors gathered aren't especially known for their crisp timing." - said critic Brian Orndorf of Blu-Ray.com "The narrative convolutions rarely add up to a decent punchline and the dialogue is only superficially funny. Modern moviegoers just won't get it, and cineastes mightn't be too impressed either." - said critic Stella Papamichael of Digital Spy.com.
